Yesterday and Tomorrow 2022
gouache and acrylics on paper 18" x 24"

Today and Tomorrow 18 by 24 etsy.jpg

Inspired by the Harnam Kaur project, Yesterday and Tomorrow metaphorically imagines an umbrella of support for new immigranants in western countries who have all been, are, and will be embodied by the types of characters in this image. The moon atop the umbrella is a guiding light in a dark night, after the sun has set and all hope may seem to have diminished

The diaspora is a collection of people of different ages, genders, castes, and skin colours. Each of them embodies unique characteristics, but they are all somehow connected to their heritage with this same deviation. They are all linked to each other under the same canopy and they share roots of the same tree trunk. The umbrella-tree is both an object of the natural world, ground in reality, and an esoteric representation of protection. Its overhang suggests the aesthetics of a spaceship that is gilded in traditional patterns, while also including advanced, surrealist mechanics that will carry the community into expansive territories. The tree branches into a new ecosystem (waterfall in forest motif), and grows spiritually (rising sun motif behind cloud, with ‘Ik’ symbol).
