Heart House
Heart House
The heart is the universal symbol for human emotion, which is why notions of closeness and vulnerability are expressed through this trope. Anything or anyone we adore is often referred to as “close to the heart.” One’s home is the most intimate built space that can be experienced, and Heart House is an architectural and sculptural allegory for this feeling of belonging. Each space in the house is a metaphor for the different members of the human heart, reflecting their functions and roles in oxygenating and recharging blood. The connectivity between the rooms of the house and their circulation paths are also akin to the movement of a blood molecule through the oxygenation process. This network generates a labyrinth of unique spaces, with both private nooks and expansive moments.

Journey 2022
gouache on paper 11" x 14"
Inspired by the Harnam Kaur project, this multi-temporal piece explores familiarity with home, and the unknown relationship to new lands. The protagonist, seated amongst familiar fauna and flora of Panjab, imagines his future in the Pacific Northwest. He knows little of what tomorrow will look like, other than the geographical make-up of his new home. Today, he openly celebrates who he is, wearing tropes of his homeland around his neck: the spinning wheel of handicraft; the marigold of celebration, the Gurdwara of sanctity; the phulkari of fine arts; and the tractor of farm labour. He is connected to his future self via his turban, as that is a piece of him that he will surely carry through his journey. When in his new home, his Panjabi-ness will flourish inside him, with the five rivers always flowing within his heart. How this will be expressed outwardly, he will find out tomorrow.
